Oger Acquires Turk Telekom for $6.55 Billion

Oger, a Telecom Italia partner, and Avea owner placed the highest bid for Turk Telekom's (TT) privatization. Analysts say $6.55 billion is a "good price".
Turkey's largest and most important privatization bid was held Friday. Oger Telecoms purchased 55 percent of TT. In the sixth round of the bidding, Etisalat, another bidder for TT, withdrew after Oger proposed $6.55 billion. Koc Holding, Oger Telecoms, Etisalat and Turkcell had submitted bidding proposals on June 24; Oger Telecoms and Etisalat, proposed the highest numbers. The bidding opened with $5.9 billion and Oger won at the end of the sixth round. TT was originally expected to be priced at $8-10 billion. Its value reached $11.909 after Friday's tender, 30 percent more than expected. The World Bank observed the bid as a "successful tender" indicating its trust in theTurkish economy. Mohammed Hariri, Oger Joint Enterprise Group spokesperson said, this was one of the first investments made in Turkey and the payment would be made in installments. The tenders will be presented to the Cabinet and the Competition Board for approval.

Turkey's first major privatization takes place today with the sale of Türk Telekom's 55 percent share more than a decade after it was first presented.
Four consortiums have bid on the company, and the successful bid is expected to be around $4.5 billion for the 55 percent of the stake.
