UMTS wordt nog sneller

(P7) Ericsson heeft nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld voor derde generatie mobiel, waaronder UTMS, om snelheden tot 28 Mb/s te bereiken.

Dat maakt Ericsson bekend.

Het project zit nog in een testfase. Ericsson toont de vinding tijdens de CTIA Wireless 2006 beurs deze week in Las Vegas in de VS.

Ericsson spreekt van HSPA, High Speed Packet Access. Dit is een afgeleide van HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) dat de mobiele aanbieders KPN, Vodafone en T-Mobile momenteel in Nederland verbreiden in hun UMTS-net. Ericsson is daarbij leverancier van zowel KPN als Vodafone.

De door Ericsson toegepaste technologie is Multiple Input Multiple Output of (MIMO). Hiermee worden verschillende radiosignalen met hun maximumdatasnelheid gebundeld tot een snellere verbinding.

De snelheid van de 'downlink', dus het halen van de data naar de mobiele terminal, wordt daardoor verdubbeld van 14 Mb/s, die met HSDPA haalbaar is, tot 28 Mb/s.

Ericsson verwacht de nieuwe technologie vanaf 2008 in haar netten te kunnen toepassen. Het UMTS Forum voorziet een miljard gebruikers van high-speed mobielgebruikers in 2012.

Ericsson is performing the world's first (High Speed Packet Access)
HSPA demonstration with Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO)
technology during the CTIA Wireless 2006 event April 5-7 in Las Vegas
(Stand #2624, Las Vegas Convention Center). The demo is based on
Ericsson's commercial Radio Base Station. HSPA with MIMO can double
the speed in the downlink up to 28 Mbps.

Part of the WCDMA evolution, HSPA is a combination of HSDPA in the
downlink and Enhanced Uplink in the uplink, both of which are
specified in 3GPP Release 5/6. HSPA provides data rates up to 14 Mbps
in the downlink and 5.8 Mbps in the uplink. The faster data speeds
made possible with HSPA evolution will enhance the user experience
for services like Mobile Broadband and Mobile TV while reducing the
production cost per gigabyte.

MIMO uses multiple transmit and receive channels and antennas to
improve performance and throughput for radio signals. The data
transmission is divided in multiple streams and recombined at the
receiver end to increase overall performance.

HSPA evolution is being specified in 3GPP Release 7 where MIMO is one
of the cornerstones. Ericsson expects MIMO to be deployed in
commercial networks in the 2008 timeframe.

'Ik hoop het. We doen ons uiterste best deze dekking eind dit jaar te halen. Antenne-opstelplaatsen vinden is lastig. Op dit moment zijn we nog ver ververwijderd van de dekkingseisen die de overheid stelt. We zitten nu op ruim de helft van de dekkingseis, zo'n 35% dus.'
